Hi, I'm Dr. Kara Jacobs Slifka from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I'd like to talk with you about the important actions we can take to keep this nursing home community clean.
These actions might be different than what you're used to, but they help keep everyone safe from germs. Whether you're here for a short time or this is your new home, cleanliness is critical in this community. Germs that might only cause the sniffles for a loved one can be serious for you or other residents. However, residents and staff can take everyday actions to prevent infections in this community.
It is very important to keep your hands clean, particularly after using the bathroom and before eating. And be sure to remind others to do so, too. This is one of the most effective ways to keep germs from spreading!
In addition, staff are expected to clean their hands before and after contact with residents. You may also see staff wearing gowns and gloves when performing certain activities. This keeps their hands and clothes clean and prevents the spread of germs.
Staff and residents can work together to keep surfaces clean. Germs live on surfaces, especially the ones we touch the most. That's why they need to be wiped down frequently, even if they look clean! So, you'll see your community's team regularly cleaning throughout the facility. Please allow staff to clean your room. This may require them to carefully move some of your personal belongings. Let them know if you see any areas that appear dirty, so they can be addressed immediately.
It's also important to stay away from others if you are sick. Germs, like the flu, can spread when people who are sick spend time around others. To help prevent spread, the community asks their staff to stay home if they aren't feeling well. Similarly, if you are ill, they may ask you to stay in your room until you feel better. They will also encourage you to ask loved ones to postpone a visit if they are sick.
To protect themselves, staff may wear masks, face shields, gowns, and gloves. In addition, they may ask you to wear a mask when you leave your room. Please be sure to tell staff if you think you have an infection or if you feel sick.
It's important to practice these actions regularly and make them a habit. That's why you will see necessary supplies, like gloves, hand sanitizer, and cleaning wipes, located throughout the community. The facility will also post signs that provide reminders to staff, residents, and visitors about how to help stop the spread of germs.
